Nell’ambito del progetto “ReIReS – Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies” (https://reires.eu/), finanziato dalla Commissione Europea, l’Isem organizza il seminario internazionale “Translating and Connecting Worlds”. L’iniziativa, che si svolgerà on line sulla piattaforma Zoom il 16 aprile prossimo alle h 16.00, si propone di evidenziare e analizzare l’importanza fondamentale degli archivi religiosi e delle fonti legate alle attività degli ordini religiosi (in particolare di quelli coinvlti nelle missioni della prima età moderna) per lo studio della storia culturale.
“Translating and Connecting Worlds” è stato specificatamente concepito e progettato in adempimento agli obiettivi generali di ReIReS (Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies) per mobilitare “la più ampia gamma di competenze, fonti, risorse e strutture del campo degli studi storici religiosi, aprendo agli utenti una pluralità sia di documenti e fonti che di strumenti di ricerca”.
Negli ultimi decenni, un complesso e articolato insieme di progetti di ricerca, tesi di dottorato e pubblicazioni, ha rafforzato la consapevolezza dell’importanza, imprescindibile, degli archivi e della documentazione religiosa per la storia della linguistica, dei testi e della lettura, la storia della geografia, dell’espansione e degli imperi europei e dell’orientalismo, così come per l’etnografia, la storia dell’arte e la storia delle relazioni interculturali. Nel loro insieme, questi campi d’indagine compositi rivelano il grande potenziale degli archivi, delle biblioteche e delle fonti religiose, al di là di prospettive di ricerca “interne”, come la Storia della(e) religione(i) o degli ordini religiosi. Gli archivi e le biblioteche religiose sono aggregatori di conoscenze che conservano e mediano fonti fondamentali per lo studio di diversi processi sociali e culturali, ben oltre il ‘fatto religioso’ in sé.
Allo stesso tempo, questi processi ci permettono di comprendere la pervasività dei fenomeni religiosi o di quelli connessi o mediati dalle pratiche religiose, nella storia delle culture, ben al di là delle, pur molteplici, prospettive delle Scienze Religiose o, al contrario, di semplicistiche letture dell’età moderna come “secolarizzazione” tout court.

In the framework of the project “ReIReS – Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies” (https://reires.eu/), funded by the European Commission, Isem will organise the international seminar “Translating and Connecting Worlds“.
The initiative, which will take place online on the Zoom platform, aims to highlight and analyze the paramount importance of religious archives and sources connected to the activities of religious orders (in particular of the orders engaged in early modern and modern missions), for the study of several branches of modern cultural history.
“Translating and Connecting Worlds” was specifically conceived and designed in accomplishment with the general goals of ReIReS (Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies) to mobilize “the widest range of expertise, sources, resources and facilities of the domain of historical religious studies, by opening up to users a plurality of both documents and sources and research tools and instruments.”
Over the past three decades, a complex and highly articulated set of research projects, doctoral theses and publications, has unequivocally highlighted that both religious archives and documentation prove to be essential for the history of linguistics, the history of books and reading, the history of geography, the history of the European expansion and empires and orientalism, ethnography, art history, the history of cultural encounters, translations and clashes. Altogether, these composite fields of enquiry have demonstrated the great potential of religious archives, libraries and sources beyond more traditional and “internal” religious research perspectives, such as the History of Religion(s) or of Religious Orders. Religious archives and libraries are aggregators of knowledge that preserve and mediate fundamental sources for the study of several social and cultural processes.
At the same time, these processes allow us to understand the persistent pervasiveness of religious phenomena or phenomena connected or mediated by religious practices, in the history of early modern and modern cultures, well beyond the institutional History of the Church or Religious History, and the simplistic claims of the “secularization” tout court.
