ROME BRANCH OFFICE

ISEM office in Rome is housed in the monumental complex of the monastery of SS. Alessio and Bonifacio on the Aventine Hill, near the National Institute of Roman Studies.

The traditional research area of ISEM is focused on the history of the Mediterranean. In addition, the researchers belonging to the Roman office have promoted diversified research paths, ranging from political, economic, cultural history, military and social geography, historical, human, social and environmental geography, cartography, linguistics, editions of sources, digital humanities.

These activities in collaboration with universities, research institutions and local authorities, the ISEM headquarter and the scientific network of the CNR.

The location of Institute has also allowed researches on the history of relations between the Holy See and european diplomacy, of missions and extra-european Catholicism, on the Reform and Catholic Reform, on the political and geopolitical role of Rome and the Papacy in the Mediterranean area.

Other research topics: the history of urban and rural landscape; the lines of exchange between cultures in the Mediterranean; migrations, colonizations and re-colonizations; epidemics; the history of political movements; socio-economic and gender issues; pre- and post-unification of Italy economic history; history of science and technology.
